Objectives : Based on the description of electrons and their orbitals in molecules, this course covers the key elements for an understanding of chemical reactions. Molecular orbitals of simple chemical systems will be built using tools derived from quantum mechanics ( LCAO and the Huckel method). Applications of molecular orbitals in a system will be discussed both with reference to organic chemistry and the physical chemistry of the molecules. Finally we shall see that these methods may be extended to allow an understanding of macroscopic phenomena, and with a further extension to the properties of materials, which will be developed towards the end of the course. |
